Old Maybe – The Whiff (Review)
8 years after “Piggity Pink,” Jazz Adam has returned with a very different kind of Old Maybe album… She has reached into the depths and pulled out her most personal and uncompromising songs yet, becoming a master of her own idiosyncratic solo music practice. Forgoing the guitar in favor of a disciplined piano roll methodology, these songs are both economical and sonically expansive, every bizarre color essential to the heaving, irregular pulse. Old Maybe’s songwriting has evolved into a sound that is dark, close-up, and direct almost to the point of discomfort. The album, temporally speaking, is quite short, yet every song is so psychically dense that the per dollar psychiatric value far exceeds almost every album 10x its length. Over the course of this time, the blunt, plainspoken lyrics melt from the concrete to the deviant subconscious, underscoring the whimsical sense of play that darts through the Spartan austerity of sound—joyous in destructive creation
Another killer review, Edvard!
All I can say is, thank you.
Thank you not only for your uncompromising pursuit of truth in music, but for introducing me to an album that has changed my mind.
Before I started my berry farm in 2006, I was convinced life had no more surprises for me. The berries, in their quiet wisdom, taught me otherwise—that novelty exists only in the present moment. But once again, I stand corrected. This album has shattered my notions of what is possible. It is new. It is exciting. It is the taste of the first sun-ripened berry on a dewy morning.
