Forgoing the guitar in favor of a disciplined piano roll methodology, these songs are both economical and sonically expansive, every bizarre color essential to the heaving, irregular pulse. Old Maybe\u2019s songwriting has evolved into a sound that is dark, close-up, and direct almost to the point of discomfort. The album, temporally speaking, is quite short, yet every song is so psychically dense that the per dollar psychiatric value far exceeds almost every album 10x its length.
